Where to escape summer heat in Changsha

Dubbed one of China's "four furnaces"— the country's hottest cities -- Changsha, despite its uncertain weather, has endured a heat wave this summer. Finding a place where you can cool down is essential during the dog days. Here are some summer places, including rafting spots, water parks and wetlands, where you can escape the heat.

 

Rafting spots

Undoubtedly, rafting is the most exciting water sports event in summer, especially suitable for groups.

 

Longquan Rafting Spot in Ningxiang county

Opening every day at 2:00 pm since June, Longquan Rafting Spot can accommodate 2000 tourists at a time. In order to ensure safety, it has installed over 20 cameras along the river, especially in the steep slope, to conduct real-time monitoring in case of emergency. Children under 1.4 meters are not allowed to take part.

 

Routes for self-driving:

1、 If starting from Ningxiang county, drive along the provincial highway S209 and Qianfodong Road to get to the ticket office.

2、 If starting from Yuelu district of Changsha, drive along the Yuelu Avenue, Ningxiang Avenue, Middle 2nd Ring Road and turn right onto provincial highway S209 and Qianfodong Road to arrive at the ticket office.

 

Tianzi Rafting Resort in Ningxiang county

Tianzi Rafting Resort is located in Huangcai town, about 62 kilometers away from the urban area of Ningxiang county. The rafting area is 9 kilometers long with 21 steep slopes, a 200-meter-long high-speed slide and a water height differential of 98.5 meters. It takes about one and a half hours to cover the whole course.

 

Routes for self-driving:

Start from the urban area of Changsha, drive towards the west bank of the Xiangjiang River and enter the highway in Yuelu district. Drive along national highway 319 to Ningxiang South Bus Station and enter Ningheng Highway. Drive past Dachengqiao town, Shuangfupu town and Hengshi town, and drive 10 kilometers along the river to arrive at the wharf.

Group ticket price per person: 158 yuan ($23.64)

 

Shikou Battlefield Rafting Spot in Liuyang

Shikou Battlefield Rafting Spot is situated in the north of Dawei Mountain National Forest Park, with a 5.8-kilometer-long watercourse and 28 rapids and shoals. Various themes of battlefield scenes provide tourists with unique interactive experiences. The area is also the headstream of the Liuyang River, and as such offers wonderful scenery.

 

Routes for self-driving:

Start from the urban area of Changsha, drive along the Changliu highway, the Daliu highway, and Liudong Road.

Group ticket price per person: 138 yuan ($20.65)

 

Phoenix Gorge Rafting Spot in Liuyang

Embraced by bizarre and rugged rocks alongside precipitous terrain, Phoenix Gorge Rafting Spot is located 58 kilometers away from Changsha. It was designed and programmed under the standard of the National 4A-Grade Tourist Attractions, with a 3.8-kilometer-long rafting track and an overall water level differential of 198 meters.

 

Routes for self-driving:

Start from the urban area of Changsha, drive along the Changliu highway, Pingru highway past Shegang Town and drive along the county highway.

Group ticket price per person: 200 yuan ($29.85)

 

Water parks

If you'd like to dip fully into cool water with your whole family, water parks are absolutely the best option.

 

Lemin Water Park

For those living in the southern part of the city, Lemin Water Park is a good choice because of the convenient transportation and fair prices.

 

Address: Besides the north gate of Hunan Forest Botanical Garden, Dongjin town, Changsha city.

Commute: Bus No. 7, 152 to the South Gaosheng Village stop, and No. 16 to the North Botanical Garden stop.

Ticket price: 60 yuan for each student, 38 yuan for each child, 78 yuan for each adult and 180 yuan for parents and a child.

Open hours: 10:00-20:00

Facilities: Over 30 kinds of water games, including children's paddling pool, swimming pool, and racing slides.

 

Underwater World

Since its opening last year, the water park in Underwater World has been very popular.

Commute: Bus No. 158, 136, 132, 501, 701, 704, 915, 368.

Ticket price: 80 yuan for each adult and 38 yuan for each child under 1.4 meters.

Open hours: 11:00-22:30 from Monday to Thursday

            10:00-22:30 from Friday to Sunday

Facilities: children's slide, children's paddling pool, swimming pool, and racing slides.

 

Window of the World

One of the earliest water parks in Changsha downtown, Window of the World has appeared on many Hunan TV programs for outdoor summer filming, attracting over 3000 visitors every day.

Commute: Bus No. 158, 136, 132, 501, 701, 901, 915.

Ticket price: 130 yuan for each adult, half-price discount for each child under 1.5 meters and those over 65 years old, and free admission for each child under 1.2 meters and those over 70 years old.

Open hours: 8:30-19:00

Facilities: children’s slide, high slides, surfboards, artificial waves, and rafting stream.

 

Forests and Wetlands

If you are afraid of water or prefer plants and trees, forest and wetland may be a better choice.

 

Yuelu Mountain

The temperature on Yuelu Mountain is 5 degrees C lower than that of the urban area because of its vegetation coverage and altitude.

 

Commute: Bus No. 106, 132, 302 and Lishan bus line to the Fourth Hospital stop or the South Yuelu Mountain stop.

Ticket price: free of charge.

 

Tanying Lake

Tanying Lake, transformed from a reservoir and covering an area of 200 mu (13.33 hectares), is located on the mountainside of Taohua Mountain. A 3-kilometer-long walkway follows the lake for visitors to appreciate the interplay of beauty between the lake and the mountain.

 

Commute: Bus No. 207 and 211.

Ticket price: free of charge.

 

Yanghu Wetland Park

Yanghu Wetland ecosystem acts as the "green lung" and "green kidney" of the city. It consists of over 10 areas including a wetland recreational area, an exhibition area of wetland biodiversity, a wetland science and education area and an ecological conservation area.
