Hunan’s First Vehicle Ro-ro Terminal Completed
At 12:30 on January 15, with a loud whistle, a large roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) ferry anchored at the ro-ro port of Changsha New Port. This is Hunan’s first professional ro-ro ship sailing on the Xiangjiang River. It marked the completion of Hunan's first vehicle ro-ro terminal which will be put into operation soon.
The ro-ro ship, named "Min Jian", is 85 meters long and 16.5 meters wide. It can carry about 350 complete vehicles at full capacity. In the future, it will focus on ro-ro services with Changsha New Port as its home port.
Hunan's vehicle transport is mainly through highways and railways. It is required to build a professional ro-ro port if vehicles are transported by shipping.
At present, Changsha New Port is accelerating its third phase construction, and the terminal berths have been completed. Complete vehicles can be driven on the ship directly when the terminal is put into operation.
Tang Zhongliang, chairman of Hunan Changsha New Port Co., Ltd., said that the terminal will significantly reduce logistics costs of complete vehicles produced in Changsha, Zhuzhou and Xiangtan. It is also capable of handling heavy-duty vehicles, which will meet the waterway transportation needs of construction machinery enterprises in Hunan Province.
In 2018, Changsha New Port completed cargo throughput of 8.07 million tons, an increase of 17% over last year.
