Huanghua airport handles over 20m passengers
Changsha Huanghua International Airport has become the first airport in Central China to process more than 20 million passengers in a single year, passing the figure on Dec 8.
The Changsha airport has expanded its capacity over the past four years. It now boasts 158 air routes, including 22 direct international routes to locations such as Los Angeles, Frankfurt and Sydney.
The runway has been expanded to handle 550 flight movements and a passenger throughput of 71,000 people per day. The second runway added in September this year will accommodate trial flights for wide-body aircrafts such as the Airbus A380, the largest passenger aircraft in the world, before they are put into service by Spring Festival.
"Huanghua airport is expected to create 70,000 jobs and increase local GDP by 1.81 billion yuan ($263 million)," said Yu Hui, general manager of the Changsha branch of Hunan Airport Group.
By 2020, the airport plans to open routes to more than 170 cities. It is also hoped that an international tourist visa center can be established to boost the international tourism industry.
