World’s First Engineering and Technical Confucius Institute Unveiled
Malaysia’s and the world’s first engineering and technical Confucius Institute was founded at the University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) on December 12, 2019. It was jointly established by the Changsha University of Science & Technology (CSUST), UMS, and the China Communications Construction (CCCC) Dredging (Group) Co., Ltd.
Liang Caide, consul general of the People’s Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu; Mohammad Mohamarin, assistant director of Sabah State Ministry of Education & Innovation; Professor Fu Hongyuan, CPC CSUST Committee secretary; Prof. Datuk Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin, UMS vice-chancellor; Zhu Zhaohui, CPC CCCC Dredging Group Committee deputy secretary; and, Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen, an outstanding representative of Chinese society, attended the ceremony. Ma Jianfei, deputy chief executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), sent a congratulatory letter. He expects the two universities to continue to work together to build the UMS Confucius Institute into an important platform for students and the public to learn Chinese and understand China. It would make greater contributions to promoting China-Malaysia cultural exchanges and collaboration, and strengthening understanding and friendship between the people of two countries.
Hanban has recently kept promoting innovation of the Confucius Institute's school running model and management mechanism. The UMS Confucius Institute will give full play to the disciplinary advantages of both universities and the engineering and technological advantages of CCCC Dredging Group. It would further develop “language, culture, engineering, and technology” communications to build a Confucius Institute with engineering and technical characteristics.
CSUST has rich Confucius Institute operating experience. The UMS Confucius Institute is its third one overseas, after those in Liberia and Montenegro.
