Established in 1960, Changsha Library is a comprehensive public library of prefectural-level city. It was once located in Dingwangtai, the original place of libraries in Hunan. Newly located in Binjiang Culture Park, Xinhe Delta，Changsha Library was fully opened in the end of 2015. It has a total building area of 32,000㎡ with 5 floors designed to have a collection of 2 million books and serve 10,000 person-time per day.
Specially and creatively designed, the library looks like a monolith lying at the confluence of Xiangjiang River and Liuyang River to embody Hunan people’s spirit and character of openness, creativity, toughness and braveness. What is worth mentioning is that the exterior wall was designed from Xunzi: Encouraging Learning, reflecting rich cultural deposits of this library.
There are more than 20 function areas such as Social Science Collections Reading Room, Natural Science Collections Reading Room, Newspapers & Periodicals Reading Room, Children's Reading Room, Adolescent's Reading Room, Visual Impaired Reading Room, Digital Media Collections Reading Room, Foreign Collections Reading Area, Local Collections Reading Room, Auditorium, Triangle Space, 24-hour Self-service Library, LeZhi Bookstore, Reading Garden ,etc.
The library is open free for the public. Up to the present, there are 100 branch-libraries, 7 24-hour self-service libraries and 86 bookmobile service stations established in Changsha. Further more, with one card in hand, one can borrow or return books in any of these places.
Aim to build a cultural complex of the city, Changsha Library hold various lectures, training, exhibitions, reading promotion activities and other cultural activities all the year. It is committed to become the center of literature resources & information service, nationwide reading & lifelong education, regional library net and cultural & academic exchanges center in Changsha.
