  • Xiang Opera

    Hunan Province is also known as "Xiang". The Xiang Opera, a major local opera in Hunan Province, was formed during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and is popular in parts of Hunan and Guangdong provinces, in southern China. The opera was based in the capital Changsha and in nearby Xiangtan city, hence the name Changsha Xiang Opera.

    Changsha Tanci is a folk art form in Hunan Province of China. It is prevalent along the Xiangjiang and Zishui River valley. Originating from an art form applied by Taoists to spread their religion, it is now heavily influenced by the local dialect.

    Hunan embroidery, one of the Four Great Embroideries in China (the four categories are embroidery respectively of Suzhou,Sichuan, Guangdong and Hunan), is world famous for its exquisite technics,unique features and long history. Archeologists have discovered finely embroidered silk items in Changsha Mawangdui Han Toms (206BC-220AD), indicating that more than 2,000 years ago Hunan embroidery craftwork had emerged.

    Created in over a hundred years ago, Liuyang Ancient Music for Confucius memorial ceremony was originally played at the Dacheng Hall of Confucius Temple in Liuyang. Dancers, instrument players, and singers gave performances at the ceremony.
