14 Hunan Handicrafts Included in the Catalogue of China Traditional Handcraft Revitalization Plan
Recently the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released a catalogue of the first batch of national-level traditional handicrafts that will receive support from the central government. The catalogue was drawn up as part of the China Traditional Handcraft Revitalization Plan issued in 2017. A total of 383 handicrafts are listed in the catalogue, including 14 ones from Hunan.
The 14 traditional crafts are:
Spinning, dyeing and embroidery: Hunan embroidery (Changsha City), Huayao cross-stitching (Longhui County, Xupu County), Miao cross-stitching (Luxi County), and dyeing of indigo print fabric (Fenghuang County, Shaoyang County), Tujia brocade crafts (Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture), weaving techniques of Dong brocade (Tongdao Dong Autonomous County);
Costumes making: craftsmanship of making Miao Costume (Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture);
Weaving: Yiyang Xiaoyu bamboo weaving (Yiyang City);
Carving: Chrysanthemum stone carving (Changsha City, Liuyang City), Baoqing Bamboo Carving (Shaoyang City);
Furniture and architecture: architectural craftsmanship for Tujia stilted building (Yongshun County); Paper-cutting and carving: craftsmanship of making chisel paper-cut (Luxi County), Tantou woodblock new year painting skills (Longhui County);
Ceramic firing: firing techniques of Liling underglaze-colored porcelain (Liling City).
The first batch of handicrafts were chosen based on the national intangible cultural heritage representative items and practical factors such as heritage basis, development prospects, the size of inheritor groups, and influence, to ensure the handicrafts will play a leading role in the formation of national or local brands.
