Things to Do in Autumn
Autumn is a good time for enjoying maple leaves, flowers, and go climbing mountains. Let’s find out where to go:
Viewing Maple Leaves on Orange Isle and Yuelu Mountain
Yuelu Mountain, located to the west of the Xiangjiang in Changsha, is one of China’s four best autumn foliage viewing locations. In late autumn, maple leaves which dominate the mountain are at their prettiest. They can be seen all over the mountain, especially at Aiwan Pavilion, Qingfeng Gorge, Lushan Temple, and on the top.
Orange Isle commands a fine longer view of its foliage. Mao Zedong’s poem describes it: “While on Orange Island cape, I see upon thousands of vermillion mountains, layer upon layer of woods dyed crimson and scarlet”.

The oranges on Orange Isle gets mature in autumn. Bright orange fruits and red maples decorate it.

How to get there:
Yuelu Mountain: Take the No.1 Lvyou Bus; the 132, 202, or 305 bus; or the Lishan Bus to either the Taozihu (桃子湖), or Hunan University (湖南大学) stop, and walk up Pailou Road and Denggao Road to the mountain.
Orange Isle: Take Changsha Subway Line 2; or, walk along the No. 1 Xiangjiang River Bridge to the isle.
Taking Flower Tours
More than 70,000 varieties of sunflowers are in full bloom at Hunan Forest Botanical Garden. There are also other flowers, such as Cosmos sulphureus, zinnia, osmanthus and bougainvillea in the garden. These beautiful flowers presented a colorful autumn scenery in Changsha.

Enjoying Osmanthus Fragrance
After the Mid-autumn Festival, Changsha greets autumn meteorologically. Osmanthus fragrance are in full bloom in cool autumn breeze, bringing the sweet fragrance to every corner of the city. Here we pick out some good places for enjoying the deliciously fragrant flowers.
Scattered osmanthus trees can be found near Yuelu Academy, Aiwan Pavilion, and Lushan Temple, while a mass of the trees are grown at the Administration Center, Aiwan Pavilion, and Cai E’s Tomb. There are nearly 30 osmanthus trees in Yuelu Academy. A 100-year-old gold osmanthus, the oldest on the mountain, stands by the Aiwan Pavilion.

Hunan Forest Botanical Garden
The Garden covers an area of 120 hectares. A 40-mu (2.6-ha.) osmanthus park is located on the east of Cherry Blossom Lake.

Hunan Martyr’s Park
The park boasts Changsha’s largest plantation of osmanthus trees. Nearly 2,000 osmanthus trees of various varieties, at least 40 years old, distribute at the south gate of the park, Martyr Monument, memorial pavilion, and Huxin square.

Wangjiang Park is opposite the Orange Isle, on the east bank of Xiangjiang River. There are nearly 100 osmanthus trees.

Hunan First Normal University
The fragrance of osmanthus flowers permeates the whole campus. The ancient buildings and the sweet fragrance may give you a sense of tranquility or peacefulness.

Guihua (osmanthus) Park
The park, formerly the Guihua reservoir, is named after the ancient osmanthus (Guihua in Chinese) planted here.

Mountaineering is a traditional custom since ancient times for the celebration of the Double Ninth Festival (or also called Seniors’ Day). Shiniuzhai in Liuyang City, which is known as “Small Huashan Mountain” is the best place to go mountaineering in Changsha. Nowadays, it also becomes a good place for camping, wild fishing and star-watching. It has recently opened the first glass slideway in Changsha, the first high-altitude glass bridge in Liuyang, and the zip-lining. At the moment, Shiniuzhai launched autumn climbing. There are many preferential measures launched between October 17 to 19 in celebrating the Double Ninth Festival:
Seniors over 60 years can get the ticket with half-price;
Seniors over 70 years can enjoy free tickets, and their accompanying family members can enjoy the same benefits as long as they announce the news via WeChat and get “likes”.
Seniors who don't like to climb mountains can choose to visit canyon. From October 17 to 21, the elderly over 60 years visiting the Panshi Grand Canyon Scenic Area in Liuyang can only spend 19.9 CNY for the tickets with their ID card. The full price is 128 CNY.
Yuelu Mountain, Heimi Peak and Yingzhu Mountain are also good choices for go mountaineering.
