Paying a New Year call is a traditional folk custom in China, which is way for people to express best wishes to each other. In ancient times, the original meaning of “bai nian” is to pay a New Year call to the elders, including kowtow, New Year’s greetings, etc. “The sons pay New Year call to their parents on the first day of the lunar year. The sons-in-law pay New Year call to their parents on the second day of the lunar year.
