Changsha welcomes a sunny but cold week

Updated: 2018-02-01

Hunan will remain in low temperature this week. According to the Hunan Provincial Meteorological Observatory, the current round of sleet weather will end on Jan 31 and the weather will remain cloudy or sunny from Feb 1 to Feb 8. During this period, the highest daily temperature will gradually pick up, while the lowest will hit minus 7℃, a fairly low temperature in Hunan. That is also the case in Changsha where the highest daily temperature will stay between 3℃ and 7℃ and the lowest down to about minus 3℃, still quite chilly.

But for Changsha citizens, it is a great comfort to see nice weather in the following days of the week. From today on to the end of this week, cloudy and sunny weather will reappear in Changsha. According to the Changsha Municipal observatory, the accumulated snow and ice around the city will melt in these two days as the temperature rises. As the saying goes, “it is not so cold when it snows as it is when snow melts”. Therefore, we should not only watch out for the accumulated snow and ice falling off from the roof and the eaves, but keep warm, especially the elder, the weak and kids, who’d better stay indoor in chilly weather.

Many citizens said that it was much colder this winter than last year. A rumour spread on the Moments of WeChat (a popular social media in China) that temperature in Changsha would slide to record minus 11℃. But Ding Xuan, head of the Changsha municipal observatory, denied that temperature in the past week didn’t hit an all-time low though Changsha has just experienced the coldest week in this winter.
