Changsha character cheered at sports opening ceremony
The opening ceremony kicked off the ninth Changsha Games in Helong Sports Center on the evening of Oct 28, with a stylish spectacular showcasing the very best in Changsha culture, economy, and social development.
The performance entitled “Happy sports and Changsha dreams”, depicted local culture and history through square dance, dragon and lion dance, fancy rope dancing and Taijiquan, or Tai Chi (traditional Chinese shadow boxing) performance.
The epitome of Changsha urban development over the past four years, the gala exposed the Changsha people’s pioneering spirit.
The Olympic spirit of “harder, faster, stronger” has also been embodied in the development of sport in Changsha with the Nationwide Physical Fitness activities launched extensively throughout the city.
A total of 25,000 performers and spectators took part in the opening ceremony, all of them students, citizens, and fitness enthusiasts from all walks of life, according to Changsha Evening News.
The grand sports event is sponsored by Changsha government and held every four years. It has become a comprehensive sporting event, displaying the latest in economic, social and sports development.
There are a total of 30,000 athletes taking part to compete for 721 golden medals in 35 categories from April to November. The event has selected 448 champions with 273 more to compete after the opening ceremony.
