Senior citizens on a visit to Changsha

Updated: 2017-09-19

“Wow, the subway’s so clean and tidy and drives fast. It’s much more comfortable than the bus”, 85-year-old Wang Guoan praised while taking subway with the company of the volunteer. Passengers kindly smiled. On Sep 15, over thirty senior citizens from Shanxiaotang nursing home in Yanwachi Community, Dongfeng Road, Kaifu District went out to see the changes in Changsha.

“Ages of the 50 senior citizens in Shanyangtang nursing home vary from 68 to 90. Most of them have difficulty in walking and their children are either busy working or far away thus unable to take care of them. Some of them haven’t gone out far for over 20 years and were restricted within the community”, said Cai Minshi, secretary of Yanwachi Community. Recently the community conducted a survey on the dreams of these citizens. “What they want is actually simple, having someone to talk to and taking the subway to visit Changsha Museum, Changsha Library, Xiangjiang New Area Planning Exhibition Hall and Changsha Concert Hall.”

To help let their dreams come true, the community organized this “visit Changsha” activity. Thirty volunteers from Shutingmei community volunteer team provided one-to-one care for senior citizens. With volunteers’ company, they took bus to Wenchangge Subway Station, then got off at Beichen River Delta and visited the four buildings in wheelchairs. It is such a warm picture to see this group of senior citizens visiting the museums and listening to introductions given by the volunteers.

“This placed used to be a wood based panel factory; now it’s so beautiful. I could hardly tell this is Changsha,” said the 83-year-old Wang Hanchun, who lives in Wangjialong and has difficulty in walking because of a serious disease 10 years ago. “I learned from newspaper that Changsha museum, library, exhibition hall and concert hall were built here and has always wanted to come”, he said delightedly.
