Changsha's 10 major sci-tec events in 2015

Changsha government's leadership in science and technology announced on Wednesday 10 major events happened in the city's science and technology sector during the past year.

 

The provincial capital has been seeking industrial transformation and upgrading through scientific innovations in recent years. What it has achieved in the year 2015 can be simply termed "brilliant".

 

The following is a list of the 10 major sci-tech events.

 

1 – For the sixth consecutive time, Tianhe-2, a supercomputer developed by National University of Defense Technology situated in Changsha, has retained its position as the world's No 1 system, according to the 46th edition of the twice-yearly TOP 500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers released in November.

 

2 – China's first home-developed low-speed maglev rail had a trial run in December in the city, marking the nation becoming the fourth in the world to master medium- and low-speed maglev rail technology, joining Germany, Japan and South Korea.

 

3 – Altogether seven scientists from Changsha have been elected as academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2015. Among them, Deng Xiaogang and Tan Weihong are now academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Chinese Academy of Engineering's newcomers from Changsha include Tian Hongqi, Liao Xiangke, Luo An, Chen Zhengqing and Zheng Jianlong.

 

4 – National Hybrid Rice Experiment Base started construction in June.

 

5 – BYD Auto decided to invest 5 billion yuan ($805.83 million) to build a new factory for electric trucks and special vehicles in Changsha, making the city the only BYD base that produces both passenger and commercial vehicles. Changsha is thus expected to be new energy vehicle base, exporting all over the world.

 

6 – "Changsha No 1", an industrial robot developed by city-based Chaint Robotics has passed product identification by China Machinery Industry Federation and gone into commercialization. It is the first industrial robot with complete independent intellectual property right in Hunan province.

 

7 – Changsha has been appraised as one of the first batch "small and micro businesses innovation and venture base models" in June. It was done after a joint assessment by Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration for Industry and Commerce.

 

8 – Changsha's Wangcheng district has also been approved as Nationial Sustainable Development Pilot Area and Ningxiang Agricultural Park recognized as National Agricultural Science and Technology Park.

 

9 – Lens Technology was successfully launched on the Growth Enterprise Market board in Shenzhen in March. Its market value has risen to 59 billion yuan, making it the second largest listed company in Changsha.

 

10 – The 2015 China (Changsha) Scientific and Technological Achievements Trade Fair reaped the honor of China's Top 10 Brand Exhibition. Altogether 151 project deals were signed during the fair, involving total contract value of 14.8 billion yuan.
