Updated: 2016-10-24

Changsha and Ölfus, Iceland, signed the Letter of Intent for establishing sister city relationship during the China-Iceland exchange activities held in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland on Oct 17 to 18.

China's Ambassador to Iceland Zhang Weidong and Iceland's Minister of Industry and Commerce, Árnadóttir attended the event.

Though Changsha and Ölfus are far apart geographically, ties between the two cities run deep in culture, trade and commerce. They both enjoy a pleasant living environment, advanced technology and industrial bases, said Yi Lianhong, leader of Changsha, in his congratulatory message.

A delegation of representatives from the Embassy of the Republic of Iceland visited Changsha in April this year and showed interest in collaborating on some energy projects. Changsha has also opened a direct flight to Europe.

The two cities vowed to promote cooperation in terms of machinery manufacturing, electronic information, biomedicine, new energy, new materials and tourism, to facilitate economic development and benefit both peoples.

Ölfus is a city famous for the bottled water brand Icelandic Glacial that is manufactured in the area, at the Ölfus spring. The area offers good services and is noted for its greenhouse fruits and horse-riding tours.
