The history of Ninxiang can be traced back as early as to the Northern Song Dynasty. The name means "home to peace". Covering an area of 2,906 square kilometers, it has jurisdiction over 25 towns, 4 residential communities (neighborhoods), and 220 villages, with a total population of 1.45 million. On April 10, 2017, the Ministry of Civil Affairs approved the application of the upgrading of Ningxiang County into a county-level city. The Ningxiang City’s administrative region is the same as its predecessor Ningxiang County. Administratively, it will be directly under the jurisdiction of the Hunan Provincial Government, and supervised by the Changsha Municipal Government. In 2017, the annual gross domestic product (GDP) reached 122.445 billion CNY, an increase of 10.3% over the previous year.
Ningxiang is an important commodity grain production base and agricultural product logistics base in China. Ningxiang Spotted Pig is one of the four famous pig breeds in China. The Weishan Maojian tea product was granted with the title of the National Geographical Indications. Grain and hog production ranked among the top ten counties in China. It was selected as the first batch of key counties with characteristic economies in Hunan province.
Ningxiang is rich in resources and beautiful landscapes. Numerous scenic wonders are scattered around. Miyin Temple is still very popular with the followers after thousands of years, being the top school of five schools of Zen Buddhism. Qianfo (means a thousand Buddha) Cave has thirteen unique caves connected with each other, stretching dozens of kilometers. Over 2,000 pieces of bronze statues such as the four sheep square statue shocked the world, and made it the "Bronze Cultural Center of Southern China."
Ningxiang is a hot tourist destination. There are many beautiful places worth for a visit, including Huitang Hot Spring Town, Weishan Scenic Area and Ningxiang Tanheli National Archaeological Site Park.
