Changsha County encircles Changsha City from the east, south and north. With a total area of 1997 square kilometers, it consists of 18 towns, five communities, 228 villages, and 41 neighborhoods. It also has a convenient transportation network, for example, Changyong Highway, Airport Highway, Belt Highway, Zhuhuang Highway, and S103 Highway running through the county, while 107 National Road, Beijing-HK-Macao Highway, provincial highway S207 and Wuhan-Guangzhou Railway pass through it from north to south. Changsha Huanghua International Airport is located in the county. The county is about 8 km from the airport, Changsha Railway Station, and Xiangjiang Port.
In 2011, Changsha County ranked 18th among the 100 developed counties in the country in terms of basic economic competitiveness and the first in mid-China. Up to the end of June 2011, the county had introduced 26 of the Global 500 Enterprises.In 2014, it saw a GDP value of RMB 110.06 billion, a year-on-year growth of 11%. By the end of 2014, it has a population of about 832,000, an increase of 13,362 compared with the year before.
