Located to the west of the Xiangjiang River, Yuelu District has jurisdiction over 15 neighborhoods, 2 towns, 2 scenic spots management offices, 1 science and technology industrial park, and 178 villages and residential communities. It covers a total area of 552 square kilometers and has a permanent residents of 837,900. In 2017, the GDP of the region was 10,167,067 million CNY, a year-on-year increase of 9.2%.
Yuelu District is at the west gate of Changsha City. Its convenient transport system connects Yuelu District with other four districts in the east with three bridges. Yuelu District combines tradition, culture and modernity. There are 89 national, provincial and municipal-level cultural relics protection sites, such as Yuelu Academy, Aiwan Pavilion, Lushan Temple, Western Han Emperor’s Tomb, Beijin Castle, etc. Its sound ecological environment with the clear Xiangjiang River, green Yuelu Mountain, picturesque Orange Isle etc., makes it contribute to Changsha’s unique style, renowned as a "City of Mountains and Waters".
It boasts obvious advantages in science and technologies as there are over 20 universities and research institutes located here, including the Central South University, Hunan University, Hunan Normal University, Changsha National Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, Yuelu Mountain University Science Park. It was reputed as “Hunan’s Silicon Valley”.

Yuelu Academy, one of the four greatest academies in ancient China, is situated at the foot of Yuelu Mountain. Yuelu Academy began to run more than 1,000 years ago. It was operated by monks in its earlier period. Yuelu Academy has been a divine spot for Confucianism education and a center of culture and literature.
