A Guide to 2019 HSK & HSKK

I. Why?

Passing the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi [HSK] is prerequisite to studying in China. It is often required of those applying for scholarships or summer camps. Passing the exam gives preferential admission to Confucius China Studies Program. It can be an essential condition of finding employment in China.

II. Test Structure

Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK)

The Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is an international standardized test of Chinese language proficiency. It assesses a non-native Chinese speaker’s ability to use the Chinese language in their daily, academic, and professional lives. HSK has levels I-Ⅵ.

(1) Those who pass Level Ⅰ can understand and use very simple Chinese words and phrases, meet basic communication needs and possess the ability to further their Chinese language studies.

(2) Those who pass Level II can have an excellent grasp of basic Chinese, and can communicate with each other directly and simply on familiar and daily topics in Chinese.

(3) Those who pass Level Ⅲ can communicate in Chinese at a basic level in their daily, academic, and professional lives. They can manage most communication in Chinese when travelling in China.

(4) Those who pass Level IV can converse in Chinese on a wide range of topics and are able to communicate fluently with native Chinese speakers.

(5) Those who pass Level V can read Chinese newspapers and magazines, enjoy Chinese films and plays, and give a full-length speech in Chinese.

(6) Those who pass Level Ⅵ can easily comprehend written and spoken information in Chinese and can effectively express themselves in Chinese, both orally and on paper.

Vocabulary level:
HSK Level I– 150 words
HSK Level Ⅱ– 300 words
HSK Level Ⅲ– 600 words
HSK Level Ⅳ– 1,200 words
HSK Level Ⅴ– 2,500 words
HSK Level Ⅵ– 5,000 words

HSK Level Ⅲ– 350 CNY
HSK Level Ⅳ– 450 CNY

HSK Speaking Test (HSKK)

HSK Speaking Test (HSKK) assesses the ability to speak Chinese. It has three levels: Primary; Intermediate; and, Advanced. The test is conducted in the form of audio recording.

(1) Test takers who are able to pass the HSK Speaking Test (Primary Level) can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and meet specific needs for communication.

(2) Test takers who are able to pass the HSK Speaking Test (Intermediate Level) can understand intermediate Chinese and converse fluently with native Chinese speakers.

(3) Test takers who are able to pass the HSK Speaking Test (Advanced Level) can understand spoken Chinese and fluently express their ideas in Chinese.

Vocabulary level:
HSKK (Primary) HSKK: 200 words
HSKK (Intermediate) HSKK: 900 words
HSKK (Advanced) HSKK: 3000 words

V. Results Certificate

Test takers can go to www.chinesetest.cn to check the results. They should receive HSK results from Hanban within one month after the test. HSK test results are valid for 2 years from the test date.
