Hunan urban design scoops global prize
Hunan Financial Center, a landmark building in Xiangjiang New Area, Changsha, scooped the American Architecture Prize (AAP) in landscape architecture, according to the local land resources and planning bureau on Oct 11.
The international recognition for Hunan's urban design highlights the upgrading of the existing buildings and landscape while enhancing the original natural environment.
The design was led by Hunan Xiangjiang New Area land resources and planning bureau, and undertaken by East China Architecture Design & Research Institute, a leading design institute in China.
The awarded building neighbors the Xiangjiang River to the east and Beijin City Relics Park to the north, covering a total area of 6.8 million square meters. It is hoped to become a regional financial center in central and western Hunan province.

This year's government work report claimed "the Hunan Financial Center is targeted to be a vigorous, distinctive and national top-notch regional financial center".
So far, a number of banks, financial institutions and projects have setup operations or headquarters in the building, which is helping the financial center take its initial shape.
"This project is going to be a turning point for the revival of Changsha and also a remarkable place of Xiangjiang," the report submitted for the prize review stated.
The AAP was launched in 2016 and is to become one of the most respected awards in the industry. It's set to honor designs in the three main disciplines of architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture, with the goal of advancing appreciation of architecture worldwide.
