Xiangju Opera illuminates the National Center for Performance Arts

Updated: 2017-09-18

Xiangju Opera, Safeguarding the Country, received grand applauses at the National Center for the Performance Arts, in Beijing, on Sept 16 and 17.

Xiangju Opera, or Hunan Opera, is a major local opera in Central China's Hunan province, which is performed in a local dialect.

The splendid performance was arranged by the Changsha's Hunan Opera Protection and Heritage Center, modeled on the history of Hunan-born general Cai E, also called Cai Songpo, who was involved in a life and death struggle with the president of the Republic of China Yuan Shikai.

Cai is a viewed as a hero of the Revolution of 1911 -- the Chinese bourgeois democratic revolution led by Sun Yat-sen which overthrew the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

The art performance was included in the list of art projects that are able to receive financial funds drawn up by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2016.

Luo Zhiyong (Cai's role player), a famous Xiangju Opera performer and national first-rank actor and Cao Rulong (Yuan's role player), an award-winning actor and inheritor of the national intangible cultural heritage, reproduced the most dramatic historic moments and showcased personal charisma of the general to audiences in the national grand arts center.
